RA&HS 170th Birthday

THE ROYAL AGRICULTURAL & HORTICULTURAL
SOCIETY OF SA - CELEBRATES 170 YEARS
2 NOVEMBER 2009

The Royal Agricultural & Horticultural Society of SA Inc will celebrate its 170th birthday at a reception to be hosted by His Excellency Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce AC CSC RANR and Mrs Liz Scarce at Government House today (Monday, November 2, 2009).

As the records state, “The Society was established in 1839 for the advancement of agricultural and pastoral knowledge, and to promote the development of the natural resources of our noble province”.

Royal Agricultural & Horticultural Society President Mr Charlie Downer said it has been a privilege to be at the helm of an organsiation of such longevity and influence.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to be President of the Society for the past five years and to have worked with a wonderful team of dedicated people,” Mr Downer said.

“In 170 years there have been many changes, including the location of the Showground.

“The Show has been held at the Wayville site since 1925, prior to this it was held at many locations around the city. In fact, tent shows were held in Botanic Park before the first exhibition building was constructed in 1860 and later across Frome Road in the grounds of the Adelaide University where the Jubilee Exhibition building was used from 1887.”

The Governor of the day has been the Society Patron since its establishment in 1839. His Excellency, Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce said he was honored to be part of a tradition that dated back to the settlement of the State.

“Being the Patron of such an organization provides an invaluable insight into the realities of rural life and its economic and social impact on our State.,” His Excellency said.

“Despite huge changes since the Society’s early beginnings, it has maintained its relevance and is arguably one of the most successful Agricultural Societies in Australia.”

This year the Society celebrates 234 Royal Adelaide Shows and 133 Royal Adelaide Wine Shows. The Adelaide Event and Exhibition Centre, continues to host more than 100 public events annually.
