Showground Rezoning Plan

Rezoning Plan for Adelaide's Showground

Minister for Urban Development and Planning Paul Holloway said today that the State Government has begun the process of rezoning the Adelaide Showground

“Once the draft has been prepared it will go on display for eight weeks,” Mr Holloway says.

“During the consultation period members of the public, businesses, government agencies and other interested parties can lodge submissions with the Department of Planning and Local Government.

“The consultation phase also includes a public meeting that will be arranged by the Development Policy Advisory Committee, an independent body that provides recommendations on rezonings.”

Mr Holloway says the rezoning will allow the Showground to be transformed into an entertainmentprecinct that expands its capacity beyond hosting exhibitions and the annual Royal Adelaide Show.

“The potential for the Showground site is enormous given its close proximity to the parklands and tram and train corridors,” he says.

“Rather than limit its use to exhibitions and the annual show, the proposed rezoning will allow the Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society Inc. to examine a broader range of uses for this site.

“Any rezoning will take into account the heritage value of the buildings and other structures on theShowground.

“But the proposed rezoning will also look at the potential to integrate elements of the site with the surrounding streetscape and transport corridors.”

RA&HS Chief Executive John Rothwell says the State Government’s Development Plan Amendment process provides the opportunity for thorough consultation to take place, ensuring input from all parties.

“Public and event organiser feedback around the recently completed redevelopment has been extremely positive,” Mr Rothwell says.

“Planning the Showground’s future will ensure sound financial results, an ability to cater for increased visitor growth beyond the current 1.3 million annually, year around usage of the venue and increased parking capacity.

“Visitors and event organisers have an expectation that public venues are multi-functional and of a high standard,” Mr Rothwell says.

Mr Holloway says much of the work to identify the potential for the Showground site has already been carried out by the RA&HS, which has prepared a concept plan that will form the starting point for the proposed rezoning.

The proposed rezoning will be designed in close cooperation with the Department of Environment and Heritage, RA&HS Inc. and the City of Unley and involves extensive opportunities for public input into the final Development Plan Amendment, he says.
